As Anamur District Directorate of National Education and Vakıfbank Atatürk Secondary School, we developed a Service Learning project within the scope of our project. This project was carried out by VB Atatürk Secondary School teachers and students under the supervision and leadership of Anamur District National Education Directorate.
With our project, we aimed to increase the cultural awareness of the people of our region, which generally has an agriculture-based economy. With the project, VB Atatürk Secondary School students explained the importance of our cultural heritage to young students, the elderly, their parents and their disabled peers through presentations, meetings, blog pages and social media.
Students and their parents, who had never visited Mamure Castle before, visited the castle. From the officials, they learned about the architectural structure of the castle, its historical importance, restoration works and its importance for Anamur.
Our students visited their younger friends at Akdeniz Primary School in their classrooms, and by telling them about the historical places in our region, they supported these younger students to gain cultural awareness.
Our students visited the “Kızılılliler Culture and Solidarity Association” and met with the elders of the village there. They listened to the traditions, customs, stories and folk songs of our region from them. Our students showed them photos and videos of places they had never seen before, in the historical Mamure Castle and the Ancient City of Ören in Anamur. Our students shared with our elders the information about the new excavations, the newly unearthed mosaics and the structures that were unexplained but now revealed by archaeologists. The enthusiasm of our elders was worth seeing.
Our students visited the special subclass of Cengiz Topel Imam-Hatip Secondary School. Our students, who met with their friends with different disabilities, contributed to the cultural awareness of their friends by giving them information about the historical buildings in our district. In September, we will provide the opportunity to reinforce their knowledge by organizing a tour of historical places where special sub-class students and the students in charge of the project will take part together.
